YOU ARE INVITED!
Place: St. Mary's sand spit
Time: noon
Date: Wednesday, April 13th
RSVP: None, please just come join us if your schedule allows
The plantings have been completed at the sand spit. This was the first successful collaboration between the Ash Creek Conservation Association and the two municipalities - the City of Bridgeport and the Town of Fairfield. We want to invite you to join ACCA, Mayor Ganim, and First Selectwoman Kupchick as we celebrate the the sea grass plantings and hopefully, a new era of working together to protect the Ash Creek tidal estuary.
On Monday, April 11th, ACCA will be meeting with Tim Bishop, the Director of Conservation for the Town of Fairfield, and Chadwick Schroeder, the City of Bridgeport's new Director of Sustainability to discuss potential federal restoration grants for Ash Creek.
The sand spit is a very fragile environment suffering from extreme erosion. The grasses will trap sand from the wind, adding height. The grasses then grow taller to get through the sand. This is how dunes are created. In the case of a storm surge, added height will help reduce wash overs which could destroy the spit.
