Erosion of This Living Shoreline Threatens Black Rock and Fairfield Homes
A Dire Situation That We Can Fix Now
Our sand spit protects part of the coastline straddling Fairfield and Bridgeport. It is eroding and could leave the area vulnerable to flooding and other damage if measures aren’t taken to replenish it.
The spit acts like a barrier to break up wave action allowing Great Marsh Island and the tidal wetlands to act like sponges to absorb flooding during large storms. Without the sand spit, the inland residential areas bordering Ash Creek as well as the tidal ecosystem within the creek would be threatened. Hundreds of homes in Fairfield and Black Rock could be affected and the wetlands could be destroyed.
